BlackBerry PlayBook Release Date – April 17th

Research In Motion is just over a month away from launching its BlackBerry PlayBook in the U.S., according to a story today from Boy Genius Report citing "multiple sources."

BGR said that according to its anonymous sources the PlayBook will be released April 10. For its part, RIM has been tight-lipped about the launch of its BlackBerry PlayBook. When it first announced the tablet last fall, the company would only say that the device would come out in "early 2011."

However, during its fiscal third-quarter earnings call in December, the company gave a few more clues about the PlayBook's release, saying that it believed "the first revenue impact from PlayBook to be in RIM's first quarter." RIM's fourth quarter ended on February 26, which indicates that the device will be out before the end of May. It should be noted, however, that RIM stopped short of giving an exact release date and didn't specifically cite April as a potential launch window.

Last month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, RIM announced plans to launch two other models of the tablet, one featuring long-term evolution (LTE) and the other offering HSPA+ connectivity. Those devices are slated for release sometime during the second half of 2011.

First of all the BlackBerry PlayBook comes with the Texas Instruments OMAP 4 dual core processor with 1 GHz per core and 1 GB of RAM. The PlayBook will ship with a 7-inch display and front- and rear-facing cameras. The 7 inch display sports a resolution of 1024 by 600 and with a large array of connectors available ( just kidding ), the device can connect to anything via Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, 3G and Bluetooth.

The BlackBerry PlayBook specs are solid, the features that it comes with would make anyone happy, not only those of us with business suits on, so this new delay only adds to my frustration ( if the rumor turns out true ). In any case, 17th of April it is – this time around. See you soon hopefully with a review of the device and not another release date announcement.

Firefox 4.0 Final Available for Download Now

The final release of Firefox 4 is available now, but only if you are prepared to FTP it.

However, the folks at Mozilla strongly discourage grabbing from their FTP servers, which aren't designed to handle the kind of traffic that a big release and lots of hungry Firefox fans adds to the mix. (Basically it's what they use to distribute the release to all their big asset servers.) In fact, they've specifically requested that we avoid linking to it in the past, so we're not doing so here.

There are lots of nice new features in Firefox 4 but notice that all of your existing add-ins will have to be upgraded and at the moment not all of them are available for the new browser.

The key features of the new version are that it runs under Windows XP (unlike IE9 which only runs under Windows 7 and Vista), it supports HTML5 and WebGL, it has a modified user interface, it uses hardware acceleration and it has a new JavaScript engine.

To get an early look at Firefox 4 simply download here :

The Most Powerful Bluetooth Speakerphone Can Also Tweet and Update Your Facebook Status

Those clip-on-to-your-visor bluetooth speakerphones are mostly passé, right? I mean most are easy enough to set up but I'm just so lazy that I never do it anymore.

Howeva! The upcoming SuperTooth HD might be worth something because not only does it have three times more power than a typical bluetooth speaker (making it the most powerful, for what that's worth), it even lets you update your Facebook status or Tweet through voice command. Tweeting in traffic is better than sitting in it. $129 in April. [SuperTooth]

Acer to introduce 7″, 10.1″ tablets, shipping April 2011

Sounds like Acer is getting into the tablet game!. With the holidays too close for comfort, the outfit's giving everyone pause that was considering that janky Android tablet on sale for Black Friday.

The tablet will also feature a Gyroscope for gaming.

All jesting aside, the flagship 10.1-incher looks quite interesting, boasting a dual-core 1GHz processor, an HDMI output and a native 1280x800 (!) screen resolution. You'll also get a 5 megapixel rear camera, an "HD" front-facing camera for video calling and full multitouch support. Hard to say how many clams it'll cost ya, but at least there's an April 2011 ship date to mark down. Moving on, the 7-inch tablet (also unnamed as of now) packs the same screen resolution, a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm CPU and the same Flash 10.1 support -- so far as we can tell, the "Android Tablet OS" Acer speaks of is Froyo, or Android 2.2.

As for the price, nothing has been confirmed, but this Acer tablet should be shipping in April 2011, and you can bet we'll be scrounging up more details as soon as we can.

The NEW iPhone 5 Is Released THIS YEAR

Are you as excited about the release of the new iPhone 5 as I am? Probably not, because I'm the one writing this hub and you're the one reading it (hopefully). I hate to admit it but somehow I've managed to become one of those Apple fangirls that you see walk into the Apple store and spend 30 minutes asking the employees all sorts of uber geek questions.

For one reason or another I've taken it upon myself to find out as much as possible about the new iPhone 5 so that I could spread this knowledge. What do I get out of it? The benefit of knowing I'm helping rid the world of lesser non-Apple phones (*cough HTC Evo cough*).

As if the iPhone 4 wasn't groundbreaking enough, the iPhone 5 is going to revolutionize the world of cell phones. Here's why:

One of the biggest benefits of owning a new iPhone 5 is that it'll come with dual core processors that will make it load at super fast speeds. Not only that, but it will be incorporating even more powerful graphics chip cards, which will provide you with better video and still images. As if the 20 gigawatt gazillion megapixel already in the iPhone 4 wasn't enough...

Right now it looks like the new iPhone 5 will be running on a 4G network (instead of the usual 3G). That means that some of the most likely network carriers to get a plan under are Sprint, T-Mobile, and maybe AT&T and Verizon. But we've all heard a lot of complaints about AT&T's network in the past, so I'm not sure how many people would opt to go with them for the new iPhone.

In fact, one of the reasons behind the increase in Jailbreaks of the iPhone 4 was that AT&T's network had way too many problems with it. Rather than deal with AT&T a lot of people ended up jailbreaking their phones instead, a fair deal considering you can get free ringtones, themes, and apps when you jailbreak your phone.

Also, anyone who says Android based cell phones are going to be able to compete with the new iPhone 5 are completely delirious. They won't even come close to the capabilities offered by the new iPhone when it comes out.

If you're thinking about buying the iPhone 4, you'll be better off waiting for the iPhone 5 instead, as it should be coming out really soon this year. Here are some of the expected features:

  • The new iPhone 5 is expected to have Face Recognition Security so that you don't have to worry about other people stealing your phone and trying to use it... That is, unless they steal your face too. (Anyone seen Face Off?)
  • Video Chat on a 4G network instead of a slow 3G one
  • Much nicer overall body design of the phone. It's going to be even thinner and have a shiny black piece.
  • Shatter Resistant and Scratch Resistant Screen
  • The lowest model will come with 32G of space and 64G of memory. I'll be able to store my whole computer on the lowest model of the iPhone 5. Yippeee for me.
  • Longer Battery Life - Up to 14 Hours of Talk Time On The 3G and 7 Hours on the 4G. With 14 hours of talking to my girlfriends, I'm only going to have 10 hours to sleep =(
  • HD Audio - The quality of sound is going to be extra crisp.
  • Built In GPS - You'll never get lost or have to download one of those stupid GPS apps.

How much will the new iPhone 5 cost? I can't speculate on that, but I'm going to assume it'll run you over $500. It's definitely going to be worth it though, and I can't wait for it to come out. http://hubpages.com

First Look at Apple's Second-Generation iPad 2

The Apple iPad 2 was released at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Steve Jobs himself officially presented the new tablet. Now as things have settled down a bit, here is an Apple iPad 2 Review, with an in-depth analysis of the key features.

Apple iPad 2 Has A Performance Boost With Dual-Core A5 Chip

This A5 chip obviously makes the Apple iPad 2 twice faster than its predecessor, while it also touts up to 9X better graphics.

Light Weight & Slimmer

It was also previously rumored that the Apple iPad 2 will be slimmer and considerably lighter than its predecessor. Well, that’s true, as Steve Jobs told the audience about its dimensions. The iPad 2 is around 33% thinner than the previous Apple tablet. The width of the Apple iPad 2 is only 8.8mm down from 13.4mm. It is even slimmer than the iPhone 4!

Apple iPad 2 Comes In Both Black & White Colors

Some users like it white and someothers like it black, so Apple decided to design the iPad 2 in both colors. The audience at the event was so really excited when Steve Jobs announced that the white iPad 2 will be shipped from the very same day than the black iPad 2, meaning that there will be no delay in the delivery of the white iPads.

Front Camera Confirmed in Apple iPad 2

The previous iPad did not have a front camera, so there was no video conferencing capability, but the face camera has been confirmed for the Apple iPad 2.

Back-Camera Records 720p HD Video

The back camera is able to record 720p HD videos. This is a great improvement in Apple’s tablets.

iPad 2 Will Be Powered By iOS 4.3

Yes that’s right! The iPad 2 will be running iOS 4.3, which will be soon available to download for your iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch 3G & 4G on March 11.

Built-in Gyroscope Will Enhance User Experience In iPad 2

Personally, the thing which has left me awestruck is this new feature. As the iPad is thinner and for it to have Gyroscope, which is aware of the movements of the device in space, is something huge!

Also the built-in accelerometer will give both the portrait and landscape views for games, photos and ebooks. Now when the three-axis gyroscope, accelerometer and compass will all work together then games, maps, and other apps know your every twist, tilt, and 360. It will be an ultimate experience!

iPad 2 Retains The Price Tag Of Its Predecessor

As for the price of the Apple iPad 2, it looks like a smart move by Apple to keep the prices unchanged. On the internet, whatever we have read about the features of the Apple iPad 2, Steve Jobs gave an excellent impression of this new tablet.

Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830

The Samsung Galaxy Ace can get far with a name like this but it isn’t going any further than its comfortable midrange spot. You know, if you want the best seat in the house you need to move the cat. The Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 is a feline droid – the black cat in Samsung’s Android portfolio. And it spells bad luck for the competition – mid-range droids are a force to be reckoned with in the smartphone world.

With the kind of specs, the Galaxy Ace could have passed for a high-end phone a while back. So, if your processing power and screen estate needs haven’t risen sharply during the past year or so, the Ace will serve you well.

In fact, with Froyo on an 800MHz processor, good connectivity and screen size and resolution that were good enough for the first three iPhones, the Samsung Galaxy Ace is looking good.

The only downside to the package is the QVGA video @ 15fps. That may be acceptable on a low-end dumbphone but certainly disappointing on a mid-range Android.

Here’s what else is going on the Ace’s spec sheet.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM and dual-band 3G support
  • 7.2 Mbps HSDPA support
  • 3.5" 16M-color TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen of HVGA (320 x 480 pixels) resolution
  • 800MHz ARM 11 processor, Adreno 200 GPU, Qualcomm MSM7227 chipset; 278MB of RAM available to the user
  • Android OS v2.2 (Froyo) with TouchWiz 3.0 UI customization
  • Swype text input
  • 5 MP autofocus camera with LED flash; Geo-tagging, face and smile detection
  • QVGA@15fps video
  • microSD slot (up to 32GB, 2GB in box)
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b, g, n and DLNA
  • GPS with A-GPS connectivity; Digital compass
  • microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v2.1
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • DNSe sound enhancement
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Document editor
  • File manager preinstalled
  • Samsung Apps brings a few nice apps for free
  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor

Main disadvantages

  • Dismal QVGA video recording @15fps
  • No shutter key for the camera
  • No support for Adobe Flash in the web browser
  • No ambient light sensor
  • No DivX/Xvid video support out of the box

So, the video is no good, but the still camera should be doing pretty well. Samsung’s refined TouchWiz 3.0 with a document editor and file manager out of the box score good points for the Galaxy Ace too.

The phone is pretty compact and we especially like the new rubbery textured back. There’s nothing to worry about in terms of ergonomics or pocketability, but those decidedly iPhone-ish looks are a bit questionable.

That’s about all we can say by just looking at the phone – and it’s the second time we meet the Samsung Ace. You may as well remember our quick preview from a while back. It’s now time to see how ready the Samsung Galaxy Ace is for the real world and we begin with the hardware.
